Topic / team sentiment
When creating your own custom retrospective template, you can set the sentiment associated with every topic.
Topic sentiment refers to the overall emotional tone or attitude expressed by team members towards a particular topic or subject under discussion. It allows you to identify any areas of improvement, trends, or issues that require any attention.
By default, all custom topics will be assigned a 'None or unknown sentiment' value. You have the option to select the most applicable sentiment to be associated with that topic. For all our existing templates, the topic sentiment has already been defined. However, you do have the option to change it to your liking.
Setting the sentiment
Navigate to the RETROSPECTIVES tab within a specific team.
START A RETROSPECTIVE and select from our ready-to-use templates or choose a Blank Template if you wish to start from scratch.
- Navigate to the TOPICS tab and select the desired sentiment for each topic.
The options you can choose from are:
- Positive
- Somewhat Positive
- Neutral
- Somewhat Negative
Negative
Based on the value you choose, it will influence the insights (reports) metrics that you see on either a team or account level. The sentiment value that you choose can still be changed at a later date and the insights will change accordingly.
Cross Team Insights and Reports are available only on an Enterprise plan.
Common themes
You can discover common themes from both an account or team level by looking at a word cloud of all ideas from all retrospectives. The word clouds exclude stop words and idea comments. They are displayed based on the topic sentiment and the color associated with it. In addition, you can click on a word cloud to download it as an image and/or click on each individual word to drill down into the individual ideas that word sprouted from. You can filter the word clouds to display either common THEMES or KEYWORDS from your meetings.
Simply navigate to the team/account HOME page and go to the INSIGHTS —> RETROSPECTIVES or HEALTH tab.
Sentiment trends
You can track how team sentiments evolve over time by analyzing retrospective data weighted by the number of ideas shared under each topic. The visual trends below reflect how often different sentiments—positive, neutral, and negative—are associated with discussion topics. Each graph aggregates this sentiment data to illustrate shifts in team mood and engagement.
SHOW AVERAGE - displays a curve, based on the average sentiment of all responses.
SHOW BREAKDOWN - displays each sentiment as a proportion of all responses.
You can even break this data down further by individual teams and looking into a summary and specific themes related to their meetings.
